STORY TIME!

When I first launched my private practice, I was so eager to get started that I dove headfirst into building my website without much of a plan. I figured, Hey, I just need something professional-looking and the clients will come flooding in, right?

I spent hours picking out colors, choosing fonts, and obsessing over my logo, convinced that a polished, professional look was all I needed. I even tried to DIY the copy, thinking that if I just described my services well enough, that would be enough to attract clients.

Then… crickets! 🥴

 

At first, I thought the issue was with the design or maybe the fonts I chose. But as time went on, I realized something even more frustrating—my website wasn’t connecting with anyone. On to Plan B.  I got credentialed with an obscene number of insurance companies and I put up a Psychology Today profile. My calendar filled up quickly, which, in theory, was great. But instead of attracting the clients I was excited to work with, I found myself dealing with a wide range of people—different ages, personalities, presenting problems, you name it. One day I’d be working with anxiety in a teenager, the next day grief in an elderly client, then couples’ therapy.

And that led to burnout… FAST.

I felt overwhelmed and disconnected. I wasn’t doing the work I had set out to do, and it was all because I hadn’t taken the time to clearly define my ideal client or how my website could reflect the unique work I wanted to do as a therapist.

I knew I needed to go back to square one. I started by defining my brand strategy, focusing on who I was as a therapist and what made my approach unique. Then I got clear on my ideal client—the type of client I wanted to serve, their challenges, and how I could help them. Once I knew who I was talking to, I reworked my website copy to speak directly to their needs.

That was the turning point. My website finally started working for me, attracting the right clients—the ones I loved working with and could make the most impact on. The difference was night and day.
